From September 27th until October 6th of 2019, Vienna will once again, for the thirteenth time, become the City Full of Design. Austria’s largest and most international design festival will highlight the latest trends in current design. Designers from Vienna, Austria, and all over Europe will experiment, make presentations, and carry on discussions. VIENNA DESIGN WEEK actively brings together the entire city and its creative potential.
In addition to events throughout the entire city, VIENNA DESIGN WEEK focusses on a different district every year. The focus this year will be the Alsergrund District. This densely built-up ninth District of Vienna offers an rich variety of ambiences, historically significant sites, as well as currently developing urban areas.
For ten days, the festival headquarters, one of the focal points for VIENNA DESIGN WEEK, will be located at the Althan Quarter in the 9th District. Ever since 1978, when the current building was constructed by the architectural community around Kurt Hlawenicka and Karl Schwanzer, this area has been an urban focal point. Covering 2.4 hectares, the area is the largest city development project inside the Guertel Outer Ring Road and occupies a central location. The Althan Quarter is an ideal setting for VIENNA DESIGN WEEK precisely because the building complex is still a much-discussed site for residents, architects, politicians, and people in the private sector. It also stands out as an architecturally striking landmark and offers an abundance of attractive spaces.
